Modern
After the end of the Edo Period and the shoguns in 1868 after a rebellion, Japan became prominent in the world for its economics, politics, and culture. The emperor was the new head of state and served only that of ceremonial head of state. After its participation in World War II, Japans economy bounced back tremendously and reserved its space in the international art world. Artists used Japanese Western lessons to transform them into Japans present day culture.

Orian:
An orian is known as a woman of pleasure of a prosititute. In this piece the woman is done in the ukiyo-e ‘idealized’ manner, but is still wearing classic Japanese attire. This image demonstrates one of the early styles of oil paint by a Japanese artist. Done by Takahashi Yuichi, who also developed the first fine art magazine in Japan.
